Understanding the Signs & Symptoms of Menopause

Menopause is a natural stage of life that marks the end of a woman’s menstrual cycles and reproductive years. It is officially diagnosed when a woman has gone 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period. Menopause typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, with the average age being around 51.

Menopause is caused by a gradual decline in the production of hormones, particularly oestrogen and progesterone, by the ovaries. This hormonal transition can affect many areas of physical, emotional and mental wellbeing.

Duration of Menopause Symptoms

Menopause itself is a single point in time - the day that marks 12 months since a woman’s last period. However, the transition leading up to menopause, known as perimenopause, can begin several years earlier and often lasts between 4 and 10 years.

After menopause, women enter the postmenopausal stage, which continues for the rest of their lives. Some symptoms may improve within a few years, while others can persist for longer.

Symptoms of Menopause

Every woman’s experience is unique, but common symptoms include:

  • Irregular or changing menstrual periods
  • Hot flushes and night sweats
  • Sleep disturbances or insomnia
  • Mood changes, anxiety or irritability
  • Fatigue and low energy levels
  • Brain fog, memory lapses or difficulty concentrating
  • Vaginal dryness and discomfort during intimacy
  • Reduced libido (sex drive)
  • Weight gain, particularly around the abdomen
  • Joint and muscle aches
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Dry skin, hair changes and brittle nails

  • Menopause Clinic Review

I attended the menopause clinic and felt like I was in very good hands. Dr Dobson was extremely professional, thorough and very caring with a lovely manner. In addition, the support staff were quick to respond to my queries, with Helen, the secretary being especially efficient and friendly. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the clinic.
