Colds, flu and upper respiratory tract infections are amongst the most common reasons for people to seek medical advice. They are typically self-limiting, and in the majority of cases patients will have mild to moderate symptoms. Occasionally, however, they can have significant complications for patients.Source: Upper Respiratory Tract Infections With Focus on The Common Cold – StatPearls – NCBI Bookshelf (opens in a new tab)
Symptoms are often categorised by inflammation of the nose, throat and sinuses, causing malaise, nasal congestion, cough, sneezing, sore throat, runny nose and occasionally fever and headaches. The vast majority of URTI cases are due to self-limiting respiratory viruses, but there are extensive pathogenic causes of both viral and bacterial pathogens.
It is important to remember that bacterial infections require antibiotics while viral infections do not, as antibiotics are ineffective against viruses. Inappropriate prescriptions contribute significantly to the development of antibiotic resistance.Source: Antibiotic prescribing for upper respiratory tract infections and acute bronchitis: a longitudinal analysis of general practitioner trainees – PubMed (opens in a new tab)
